USS MAHAN ASSOCIATION
DD-102 DD-364 DLG-11 DDG-42 DDG-72
5 July 2005
Another half a year gone by and I am still trying to compose something that I think you would be interested in. Seems that after we have had our reunion there is always lots to talk about and just before we arc going to meet I go brain dead.
I was in contact with Mike Conran, Command Master Chief, and asked him if he would get me an interview with one of the female sailors aboard the DDG 72. 1 thought it would be interesting to know something about them being as most of us in the association come from an all male navy.
Anyway here is what she had to say:
"My name is Cryptologic Technician (Administrative) First Class Jennifer D. Rivas
I enlisted in April 1992 in Meadville, Pennsylvania and attended recruit training at RTC Orlando, FL. and CTA "A" in Pensacola FL. In October 1992 I was assigned to Naval Security Group Activity, Edzell, Scotland where I served as an assistant in the Special Security Office. In October 1995 1 was assigned to the Gordon Regional Security Operations Center (GRSOC) at Fort Gordon, Georgia where I served as the Crytologic Direct Support Administrative Assistant. In October 1998 I was assigned to staff duty for Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, Coronado, California where I performed duties of Leading Petty Officer and Special Security Officer.
In 2001 I accepted orders to Defense Courier Service Station (DCSS), San Antonio, Texas where I served as a courier for highly classified, time-sensitive national security material. During this tour I obtained qualification as a Naval Air Observer and was selected as DCS Sailor of the Year and Runner-up OPNAV Sailor of the Year.
In July 2004 I reported aboard MIGHTY MAHAN for my first tour of duty at sea. I am the Commanding Officer's direct representative in all matters pertaining to sensitive compartmented information (SCI) and personnel security. In addition, I perform duties as the passport and naturalization officer for non-U.S. citizens serving with distinction aboard MAHAN.
For most of you, a woman serving at sea is new and unusual. USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
(CVN 69) was the first combatant to have females permanently assigned. " Not in my navy". That is what my dad used to say. I am proud to say that over 50 women, both officer and enlisted, have been integrated into every duty, department and division aboard MAHAN. We are integral members of the team aboard our ship, from Damage Control to Fire Control we are proud to serve. I am grateful for the additional opportunities, knowledge and trust placed in the women aboard this mighty warship. I am a proud navy daughter who continues the tradition of Naval Service."
Now for the sad part of my duties, and that is to report the passing of our comrades. I received the following notices:
James C Ogorek ETC who was a plankowner of the DLG-11 however I could not come up with a date.
Franklin E. Carr PhM2 aboard the DD-364 passed away 9 March 2005
James H. Craig CMM aboard the DD-364 passed away 20 May 2005
Let me send my heart felt condolences to all as I am sure it is felt among the entire association.
Capt. Sweet received the following e-mail from LTjg Jim Keller Jr. I am sure that it will be of interest to all.
CAPT Sweet,
As you may know, MAHAN association members and Sea Cadets from the Mahan Division recently had a chance to meet and swap 'sea stories' aboard the USS MAHAN’s (DDG-72) recent deployment.
While I was not in participation, our Escort 0fficer and all cadets in attendance came back from the cruise with nothing but the utmost respect for the MAHAN veterans in attendance. Our young cadets could not have received a better educational experience, hearing the stories first hand from the men that were there is as real as it gets.
I hope and look forward to our organizations developing a working relationship. I believe it will greatly benefit all parties involved.
Please check out our unit’s website http://www.mahandivision.org to learn more about our unit and the Sea Cadets, or feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns.
Respectfully,
LTjg Jim Keller, Jr., NSCC Executive Officer
MAHAN Division/Training Ship Louis D. Liskin

Greetings,
I hope this finds you well. The reunion this fall promises to be spectacular. I know Jerry has worked hard to put this package together for us and we don't want to pass up the opportunity to see old friends again and swap a few sea stories. We even have some members with a couple of new sea stories as they had a chance to ride DDG-72 for a three day shakedown cruise. See you in Branson, MO.
All the Best,
Jeff Sweet,
President, USS Mahan Assn.
ON BOARD UNDERWAY OPERATIONS DDG 72 VACAPES MAY 2005
By Dave Krumlauf - Plank owner DLG -11
Back in early May of this year, DDG-72 gave four of us ex Mahan blue jackets the opportunity to go out to sea to observe the ship's three day pre-deployment shakedown that was scheduled just prior to their going to the Med. Unfortunately, as they only had limited berthing available, only Board members were invited with the knowledge that only a few of them would be able to make it. Jeff Sweet DDG-42, Russ Owens DLG-11, Al James DD-364 and I signed up. At the last minute, Jeff got caught with jury duty and was not able to make it, so then Mal Wiseman DLG-11 got to go along, as he lives nearby in Washington and had the time available.
We arrived on Sunday, and were immediately made welcome by the Command Master Chief, Mike Conran. As berthing was given out in accordance to what our former Navy ranks were, I ended up in the Squadron Commander's Stateroom which was most likely slated for CAPT. Sweet, while Russ, Mal and Al were assigned to crew’s berthing. I do not think this Ret. Reserve W4 and former MMC will ever live that down. All of us had our meals in the "Goat Locker" and were well-received and treated royally by everyone on board. We had the freedom to go where we wanted and were given tours of the ship by the Command Master Chief, and leading Chiefs and Petty Officers. As the Command had also invited a number of U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps teenagers from the Mahan Div. to go along with us, we spent quite a bit of time interfacing with these youngsters and future sailors. The highlights of our three days aboard included observing two formal burial at sea ceremonies, the firing of the ship's 5" and Phalanx close in weapons, and observing the ship's Boarding Party being put thru their paces by a number of SEALs from a SEAL training detachment. All four of us old timers also took an opportunity, along with the Sea Cadets, to fire one of the ship's 50 caliber machine guns, a first for all of us! Unfortunately, we only had two days at sea due to the fact that the ship had reefer problems, which had to be addressed before they deployed. Coming back to port included a night at the new Chiefs’ Club at the Naval Base with the CMC and having a contingent of Chief side boys pipe off Al James, which was quite an emotional event, I was told. (I unfortunately missed it as I had to leave earlier).
I know that I can speak for all four of us that the new Mahan is in capable hands and the crew is well trained and ready to go in harm’s way, if needed. We wish them well on their deployment What a proud time it was for all four of us, and we did not have to stand any watches! We thank the CO, CDR.Wydler, the XO, LCDR. Huck and CMC CMDCM.(SW) Conran for inviting us, and we also thank the Officers, Chiefs and Crew of DDG-72 for their hospitality.
If my count is correct we have signed up 28 new members to the association since last January. Let me say to all welcome aboard.
When the newsletter was mailed in January I enclosed a post card for everyone to fill out and return to me concerning mailing, e-mailing, and website posting of the Newsletter. As of this time out of 628, 1 believe was the count at mailing, I have received back 140. Not too good of an average. If you haven’t returned your pre-stamped postcard please do it. It would save the association quite a sum of money and would make posting the Newsletter easier.
The reunion in Branson is scheduled for 5-9 Oct. Please note that ½ of the registration fee must be paid by the 5th of August and the remainder by the 5th of September, as reservations must be made for tickets to shows and for the dinner show on the Showboat. Reservations can be made on line at the reunion website, http://www.reunionproregistration.com/ussmahan.htm or with the enclosed registration sheet.

Well here I am again. Wondering what happened to 2004.
All in all it was a good year and I hope it was for all of you. Let me start by saying what a fantastic reunion we had in Virginia. Congratulations to Jeff and Bev on a job well done. We did have a great time. Williamsburg, and Norfolk brought back a lot of memories, even if there wasn't a thing there that I remembered from 40 years ago. One thing we did miss was being able to go out on the DDG 72 while we were there. For some unknown reason she was deployed the day before we were to arrive.
We picked up a lot of new members during 2004 and I would like to take this opportunity to say welcome aboard.
I received a letter on the 27th of November from Bill Chrissman informing me that a fellow 364 sailor had passed away on 24 November. By my records Frank Cechvala, Seaman First, was not a member of the association but I'm sure that there are members who remember him. I have an obituary that will be posted on the website. Also George Johnson, in Dallas, is in failing health. One thing he does remember is losing his 364 hat, so if anyone has an extra one, would you please get in touch with me. Sure would like to see George get a new one.
At this time I would like to congratulate Dick on the fine job he is doing as webmaster. I hope that you all will take the time if you are on the internet to go to http://www.ussmahan.org and check it out. We have a lot of good information and pictures floating around up there. If you have any pictures or information you would like to post on the website all would be appreciated. You can e-mail it to 2dickhall@a@cox.net.
The following is a message from our president, Capt Jeff Sweet.
The Sailor of the Quarter for the 3rd quarter are:
Senior-FC2(SW) Sara Martin
Junior--HM3(SW) Christopher Street
Bluejacket-CTRSN(SW) Ralph Paulk
The Sailor of the Quarter 4th quarter are:
Senior GMI(SW) Misty Lilly
Junior-0S3(SW) Steven Vaillancourt
Bluejacket -GSMFN Jorell Rohan
I hope that this finds you well and looking forward to the reunion in Branson, MO this fall. Bev and I enjoyed having the reunion last fall in Virginia. We ultimately turned a profit for the event.
Jerry is including some paperwork for you to fill out regarding the newsletter. It is our intention to post the newsletter on the website and send you an e-mail telling you when the latest edition comes out. We will have a paper copy but only for those who ask for it. As I'm sure you know, the cost of mailing just keeps going up, and this will be a substantial cost saver for us as well as cutting the time Jerry has to spend putting bits and pieces together for a mailing. Also on the web, you will now have the opportunity to get the newsletter in color as well as check out the other pages posted on the site.
See you at the reunion,
Jeff Sweet
